As summer wears on and temperatures climb, your energy bills tend to follow suit. However, by adopting some energy-savvy solutions, you can buck this trend. Here are five ways to cut your air conditioning costs.
Get a programmable thermostat
Consider making the switch to a programmable or smart thermostat. These devices regulate heating and cooling in your home according to your preferences. For example, you can program the system to turn off as soon as you leave the house in the morning and turn it back on half an hour before you get home. With many of the newer systems, you can even manage your home’s temperature when you’re away from home by using your smartphone. This ensures your home’s heating and cool remain at optimal usage any time of day regardless of who is home.
Clean your air filters regularly
When air filters are clogged with dirt, dust and debris, your air conditioning unit has to work that much harder. To keep your system working efficiently, replace your filters every three months (or, if they’re washable, clean them every three months and replace them when they’re worn).
Having your home’s HVAC system cleaned and the filters replaced will not only prevent a system failure, but improve the quality of air you breathe.
Close off basement vents
The basement is usually the coolest part of the home. By closing the basement vents, the cold air will be redirected to the areas of your house that need it most, making your system work much more efficiently.
Rearrange furniture
Make sure you don’t have air blowing directly into beds, curtains, couches or other furniture items. If moving things around is going to upset the feng shui of your rooms, you can, alternatively, purchase attachments for your vents that direct air in the right direction.
Have your HVAC system serviced annually
An HVAC technician can inspect and service your cooling system to ensure that it’s working at peak efficiency. In addition to saving you money on your energy bills, this reduces the odds of an issue arising with your air conditioner and leaving you stuck — and sweaty! — in the middle of a summer heatwave.
