It’s important to deal with air conditioner issues promptly. Even minor problems can affect the performance of your unit and accelerate wear and tear. Plus, with summer quickly approaching you don’t want to ignore the early signs before it’s too late.
Here are five easy-to-recognize signs that your AC needs some TLC!
It’s blowing warm air
If your AC unit has literally lost its cool, it may be on the fritz. This issue could be caused by a number of things, including a refrigerant leak, low refrigerant levels, a duct leak, a blown fuse or a broken capacitator. It could also be caused by the coil‘s being dirty and requiring cleaning.
Check the evaporator coil outside the house or the condenser coil inside the furnace. To remedy the problem, call an HVAC technician.
It’s leaking
This may seem like an obvious statement, but your AC system should remain dry. If moisture builds up, it could cause mould and mildew growth. Moreover, it points to an issue with the unit.
In some cases, a moisture problem is due to a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is highly toxic, so in this situation it’s best to call a professional. A buildup of moisture could also be due to a clogged drain line. If you’re handy, you can remove the clog yourself with a thin, wire brush. Otherwise, you can call a licensed plumber.
Something smells weird
If there are unusual smells coming from your unit, they could be more toxic than you think so don’t just ignore them. Musty smells are a sign of mould. Sometimes problems with mould can impact the air quality in your home and put your family’s health at risk. A burnt smell likely indicates a burnt-out wire or another electrical problem. If you smell something strange and can’t find the source, call in an HVAC technician to conduct an inspection immediately.
There’s poor airflow
If the air isn’t blowing freely, then your AC unit isn’t cooling your house efficiently. Sometimes, the issue can be fixed simply by replacing the air filters. However, poor air flow can also be caused by a faulty blower motor or fan motor control board. You may need to get these parts replaced by an HVAC technician.
There are unusual sounds
Air conditioners are supposed to operate quietly. If there are strange noises such as grinding or screeching, this indicates there’s an issue with the internal components. If you’re AC unit is noisy, get it inspected by a qualified HVAC technician. Alternatively, it may be time to replace your entire unit. On average, air conditioners last about 15 years.
